Reston Used Book Store turns 35, soon to be only bookstore in Reston

If Reston were incorporated, its population of 58,000 would make it the largest town or city in Fairfax County, and second behind only Alexandria in the entire State of NoVa. But as of February, Reston will have only one bookstore when Barnes & Noble vacates its spot near the Town Center.

Maryland's high court allows Gov. Martin O'Malley to replace former Del. Tiffany Alston

Maryland's highest court confirmed Friday that ousted state delegate Tiffany Alston will not get her position back and gave Gov. Martin O'Malley broad power to fill the vacancy.

In a one-paragraph order, the Court of Appeals affirmed an earlier ruling by Prince George's County Circuit Court Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr. that gave O'Malley (D) power to choose who represents the 24th District in the General Assembly. An opinion explaining the order is expected in the coming months.

Ex-Prince George's jail guard pleads guilty to lying about inmate's death

A former corrections officer who was at the center of a months-long investigation into the 2008 asphyxiation of an accused cop killer at the Prince George's County jail pleaded guilty Friday to obstructing justice, admitting that he gave police a false account of an incident that has remained murky for more than four years.

PM Update: A chilly weekend; slight chance early Sunday light snow or rain

We had enough sunshine today for temperatures to reach seasonable levels in the low-to-mid 40s. We also saw sunset wait until 5 p.m. for the first time since November 8 (days are growing longer). The weekend is a chilly one and a little disturbance swinging by late Saturday night into Sunday morning might produce a little light rain or snow.

Union Station tax dispute is settled, also not settled

The District today settled a lawsuit over an arcane tax dispute with two groups managing space at Union Station. The agreement will pump $7.5 million into city coffers, but it also leaves the underlying question — whether the District has the power to tax economic activity on federal property — unresolved.

Kaya Henderson is, unsurprisingly, not okay with arming teachers

In the least surprising news of the day, D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson is not keen on arming teachers or otherwise bringing "good guys with guns" into her schools.

Appearing on WAMU-FM's "Politics Hour," Henderson rejected the more-guns-the-better approach that has been favored post-Newtown by the National Rifle Association and given shrift by some political leaders, including Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).

Serial groper may have struck for 15th time in Fairfax County

Police believe an assault on a 30-year-old woman in Annandale may be the 15th case linked to a serial groper in Fairfax County.

The woman was jogging in the 4400 block of Briarwood Court near Patriot Drive at around 5:45 p.m. Thursday, when she saw a man suddenly approach her from Ivymount Court, Fairfax County police said.

Don't look now, but your take-home paycheck just got a little smaller. The end of the payroll tax holiday on January 1 means that taxes on salaries just went up from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent. Translation: Those earning $50,000 will pay about $1,000 more in taxes this year, while a person making $35,000 will pay $700 more than in 2012.

He's not a professional singer, and he says he doesn't warm up before he comes out to sing the national anthem, whether it's at an empty Little League ballpark or a football stadium with 80,000 crazed Redskins fans. But you wouldn't have known any of that by the way D.C. Washington ignited the FedEx Field crowd before last week's Cowboys game, and the Redskins have tapped him again to stir things up before the playoff game against the Seahawks this Sunday.

Sen. Michael Crapo sentenced on DWI charge, apologizes

Sen. Michael Crapo (R-Idaho) pleaded guilty Friday to drunk driving following a December arrest in Alexandria, and issued a sweeping apology after a judge accepted his plea.

Crapo, who appeared in Alexandria District Court, was sentenced to 180 days in jail, all of which was suspended. His license was suspended for a year, but he's eligible for a restricted license. Crapo must also pay a $250 fine and complete an alcohol program over the next year.
