We can't afford either Jan 17th 2013, 14:45 The president seems either to not understand the legislative process very well or to remain undecided as to whether he wants progress or more political fighting on the gun violence issue. How else to explain why he threw into his anti-gun violence plan giant, unattainable items such as an assault-weapons ban (which we couldn't adequately define in 1994 and didn't work) alongside some common-sense items such as armed school guards and funding for mental health? If the witness changes his story, he looks like a liar. If he sticks with problematic statements, he turns off those who sit in judgment. What is true in a courtroom with a jury is certainly the case with Chuck Hagel and the U.S. Senate. "Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee have put forward a schedule for producing a budget resolution this year to committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.). The Senate has not passed a budget resolution since 2009, and Murray last year suggested that a budget may not get done again this year.
