Fairfax Underground website ordered to remove Fairfax High School grades

PM Update: Winter blows in right on time; flurries this evening, very windy Saturday

Through today, all but two days this month have been warmer than normal. But once it officially became winter early this morning, temperatures dropped as if mother nature hit a switch. Strong winds and even a few snowflakes have accompanied the chill. Blustery weather continues Saturday, before winds relent Sunday.

National Portrait Gallery to display Obama artworks during inauguration weekend

Portraits of Barack Obama by two major artists will go on display inauguration weekend at the National Portrait Gallery.

The big get for visitors will be a chance to see two of the ten tapestries recently created by the artist Chuck Close as a campaign fundraiser. Close has said he created the tapestries after an hour-long photo shoot with the president; they were first unveiled during the Democratic National Convention, and are on loan to the museum from the collection of Ian and Annette Cumming.

Wind advisory Saturday for Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas

Winds have howled today with gusts to 35 mph, but they'll rage tomorrow, with gusts up to 50 mph. Given the intensity of wind predicted, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the entire Washington, D.C. and Baltimore regions from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Kenyan McDuffie is on the rise

Tallying up the winners and losers of Thursday's D.C. Council committee shuffle, there appeared to be one clear winner above all: Ward 5 s Kenyan McDuffie.

Not only did the rookie Democrat keep his seat on the powerful Economic Development committee; not only did he get handed the gavel of the Government Operations panel, more substantial than his current assignment; but Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) tapped McDuffie to serve as his chairman pro tempore.

President gives federal workers day off work for Christmas Eve

President Obama on Friday signed an executive order giving federal employees a day off work for Christmas Eve, which falls on Monday this year.

Exceptions apply for employees asked by their departments and agencies to work for reasons of national security, defense or other public needs.

December 26 winter storm chances grow; wintry precipitation Christmas Eve?

Two weather systems are expected to impact the area next week, a weak one late Christmas Eve into early Christmas morning with a stronger one expected on Boxing day, December 26. Each has the potential to bring winter weather to portions of the area but each also could end up primarily as rain.

Commission recommends raising Maryland's political contribution limits

A commission launched by the Maryland legislature is calling for an increase in the state's limits on political contributions as part of an overhaul of its campaign finance laws.

Under current law, individuals are allowed to give up to $4,000 to a single candidate and a total of $10,000 during a four-year election cycle. Those limits have not changed since 1991.

Explosive device discovered in College Park

A bomb squad was called to College Park Friday morning for the third time in a week, after an explosive device was found in a van parked in the 5000 block of Edgewood Road.

Prince George's County Fire/EMS temporarily evacuated nearby residents, while the bomb squad rendered the device safe.

Unemployment drops slightly in District, Virginia and Maryland

Unemployment levels in the Washington region dropped by the slimmest of margins in November, mirroring a small but consistent decline in joblessness across the country.

The rate dropped a 0.1 percent across the board in Maryland, Virginia and the District, according to government data released Friday. The District's jobless rate remained the highest of the three, hovering at 8.4 percent, well above the national average of 7.7 percent. Conversely, in Maryland and Virginia, unemployment stands much lower, now at 6.6 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively.

Christmas travel weather: wind and snow spell trouble in some spots

Today into Christmas Eve, many people will take to the roads and the sky for holiday travel. On the plus side, the worst of Thursday's blizzard is over, but very strong winds and pockets of snow on the storm's backside will create hazards in the eastern third of the U.S. through late Saturday.

Kwanzaa celebrated at The Anacostia Community Museum

For many African American families, the holiday season wouldn't be complete without Kwanzaa, the week-long secular celebration based on African harvest traditions. The Anacostia Community Museum, which has been observing Kwanzaa since shortly after the holiday was established in 1966-67, has one of the largest programs in the Metro area with multiple activities between the holiday's beginning, the day after Christmas, and it ending, New Year's Day.

Md. delegate faces alcohol-related charge, four others in August boating collision

The weekend and beyond: Preparing for holiday getaways and final shopping

Almost no road or transit work is scheduled for the D.C. region during the holiday weekend, as people launch their holiday getaways or finish their Christmas shopping.

The Capital Weather Gang's solstice weekend forecast includes a high wind for Saturday and high temperatures in the 40s throughout the period. It's a decent getaway forecast for the immediate D.C. area, but be sure to check the weather along your entire route. Drivers heading west, for example, may encounter snow and snow drifts.
