Special topics in budget physics
Dec 21st 2012, 21:26

Is the deficit reduction deal being negotiated by President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner -- or at least the one that was being negotiated prior to the "Plan B" fiasco -- likely to be small-ball, medium-sized or a massive grand bargain that restructures the federal budget? Or is all the talk of deficit reduction misleading, camouflaging a deal that would actually increase deficits dramatically?

John Boehner, after 'Plan B'
Dec 21st 2012, 18:06

The spectacular blow-up Thursday night of John Boehner's "Plan B" has many in Washington questioning the Speaker's leadership. After he cancelled a vote on his fiscal cliff proposal, known as Plan B, because he failed to garner the votes, will he be able to hang onto his job? If he can't deliver House Republicans on this vote, how can he on one that will likely include broader tax increases? How will he survive the humiliation of this defeat?

What negotiation theory can teach us about the fiscal cliff talks
Dec 21st 2012, 17:37

In a way, the Obama presidency is the biggest test that the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School has ever faced. The program, founded in 1983, has long been a leading source of research on which negotiation methods — and which mediation and arbitration methods — are most effective, and which backfire. It offers courses to law school students and to the general public and frequently lends its services to companies and governments mired in intractable situations.

Unemployment drops slightly in District, Virginia and Maryland
Dec 21st 2012, 17:02

Unemployment levels in the Washington region dropped by the slimmest of margins in November, mirroring a small but consistent decline in joblessness across the country.

The rate dropped a 0.1 percent across the board in Maryland, Virginia and the District, according to government data released Friday. The District's jobless rate remained the highest of the three, hovering at 8.4 percent, well above the national average of 7.7 percent. Should Democrats have helped Boehner pass Plan B?
Dec 21st 2012, 16:27

President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi missed a great opportunity Thursday night (okay, I realize I'm late, but I'm just getting used to this 24/7 thing). They should have quietly called Speaker John Boehner and offered to provide whatever votes were necessary to pass his Plan B.

Did Plan B's defeat make a December deal more likely?
Dec 21st 2012, 15:53

Some sharp analysts -- including Matthew Yglesias, Jon Chait and Phil Klein -- think the defeat of House Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" might be good news for a December deal.

The argument goes like this: Boehner's initial hope -- "Plan A" -- was a deal with President Obama that a huge majority of his members would support. Boehner walked away from "Plan A," at least temporarily, because he didn't have the votes.

Merry Christmas! The economy is doing better than you think.
Dec 21st 2012, 14:58

Two new numbers out Friday morning indicate that the U.S. economy is plugging along better than you thought.

The most important legs of the economy—consumers and businesses—both showed surprising resilience in November, even as negotiations heated up over the fiscal cliff. Personal consumption spending rose 0.4 percent and incomes rose 0.6 percent, according to one report. According to another, overall orders for durable goods rose 0.7 percent while a key measure of business investment, orders for nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft, rose a surprising 2.7 percent.
