Don't kill the shale-gas boom
Dec 24th 2012, 01:19

Let's not smother the shale-gas boom. It is the crown jewel of the disappointing economic recovery. Why tamper with success? Yet, there are those who argue that benefits of shale gas could be maximized if we restricted gas exports, mainly as liquefied natural gas (LNG). This would, it's argued, keep prices low for U.S. consumers and manufacturers, contributing powerfully to the revival of American industry. Sounds convincing. It isn't.

It's our system on the cliff
Dec 24th 2012, 01:18

The United States faces a crisis in our political system because the Republican Party, particularly in the House of Representatives, is no longer a normal, governing party.

The only way we will avoid a constitutional crackup is for a new, bipartisan majority to take effective control of the House and isolate those who would rather see the country fall into chaos than vote for anything that might offend their ideological sensibilities.

Will 2013 see action on Iran's nuclear program?
Dec 24th 2012, 01:17

Back at the beginning of 2006, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) made waves in Washington by predicting that the United States could ultimately have to choose between allowing Iran to go nuclear and taking military action to stop it. Pretty much every year since then, someone's New Year's forecast has had that fateful choice finally coming before the president.

Steep U.S. drawdown in Afghanistan brings substantial risks
Dec 24th 2012, 01:17

The Obama administration appears determined to vacate Afghanistan as fast as possible. If the latest leaks are to be believed, officials are willing to leave as few as 6,000 U.S. troops behind after 2014, concentrated at the Bagram air base and a few other installations around Kabul. The mind boggles at what this would mean in military terms.

Finding the right direction on guns
Dec 24th 2012, 00:39

The only ones trying to "exploit tragedy for political gain," as National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierre put it, are the National Rifle Association and anyone else pushing to put armed guards in our schools [front page, Dec. 22]. The NRA might profit from more people carrying more weapons, but what will be the effects on our children and nation? Our schools will look like prisons. Our children will grow up believing a gun is the answer to every problem. The ideas of community, mediation, compromise, deliberation and problem-solving will be shoved aside. Children will learn that the only way to be safe is to carry a gun.

Micromanaging UDC
Dec 24th 2012, 00:37

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) is right in advocating having the University of the District of Columbia Community College where the need is ["Fired president seeking UDC pay," Metro, Dec. 21].

He is wrong, however, in trying to keep the college on North Capitol Street. Moving it to the main campus on Connecticut Avenue will save millions every year and ensure better use of space. The university has a plan to have a branch campus in every ward in the city. It has not been implemented because the city has not provided the funds to do so.

An assessment of personality types
Dec 24th 2012, 00:36

Regarding the Dec. 16 Business story on what The Post called the Myers-Briggs personality "test":

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an assessment, not a test. So, fortunately, no one can "flunk" it. The principles of Myers-Briggs offer a window to understand type and its implications. Its goal is not only to increase self-knowledge and, hence, self-management skills but also to recognize, and even celebrate, the positive contribution of individual differences.

Hagel put country first
Dec 24th 2012, 00:35

In his Dec. 21 front-page story, "Vietnam scars still show in Hagel's policies," Craig Whitlock wrote of former senator Chuck Hagel, regarding the Iraq war: "His unbridled assessments left other Republicans wondering whose side he was on."

Lessons from earlier struggles over guns
Dec 24th 2012, 00:33

Joseph A. Califano Jr. ["The lesson from LBJ," op-ed, Dec. 17] has a selective memory of the gun control "lessons" learned from President Lyndon B. Johnson 44 years ago. He should recall the fate of Sen. Joseph Tydings (D-Md.). Johnson had a clear grasp of what was politically feasible. Undeterred, Tydings, who was widely thought unbeatable, announced that his 1970 reelection would be a "referendum" on federal gun registration and owner licensing.

Editorial Board: Playing with the fire of polio
Dec 24th 2012, 00:17

THE GLOBAL BATTLE to wipe out polio has come closer than ever to success, but obstacles remain. The hurdles are not only the highly infectious nature of the disease but also war, corruption, weak public health systems and failing states. Last week added another obstacle to that list: obscene acts of violence. In Pakistan, nine unarmed vaccination workers were killed by gunfire while distributing medicine that could save the lives of countless children. Six of the victims were female, including three teenagers.

Editorial Board: Kwame Brown hardly in the clear
Dec 24th 2012, 00:15

"THERE'S A REAL difference between not being criminally charged versus running a campaign properly." That point, made by U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. this month as he closed the criminal case against Kwame R. Brown's 2008 reelection campaign, is apparently lost on the former D.C. Council chairman. That's all the more reason we hope that D.C. election officials are serious about pursuing lingering issues that surround this campaign.

NRA chief on NBC: Media are protected by armed guards. Really?
Dec 23rd 2012, 17:13

National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre appeared this morning on NBC's "Meet the Press" to continue pressing for his organization's insistence that armed guards are the most effective way to protect schools across the country. Picking up on a talking point from his Friday news conference, LaPierre said that armed protection is a critical factor in protecting all kinds of folks, including the media: "Most of the media, when I go around this country, they're protected by armed guards," said LaPierre to David Gregory.
