Carolyn Hax: Accepting a live-in girlfriend

Dear Carolyn:

I am a traditional person and believe couples should marry before living together. My son has a live-in girlfriend. How do I respect their choice without condoning it? I do not want them to be an example to younger members of the family of how things are done. Should the live-in be invited to family gatherings, be viewed as "part of the family," etc.? Or should we be cordial and polite but not so inclusive as to blur the lines between real family and pseudo-family?

Joe Kennedy III, newest Kennedy in Congress, marries Lauren Anne Birchfield

Married: Joseph P. Kennedy III, 32, and Lauren Anne Birchfield, 28, in Corona del Mar, Calif., Saturday. He's, yes, one of those Kennedys — the RFK grandson who just got elected to Congress from Massachusetts last month. His bride is a fellow Harvard Law grad now working in health-care policy in Boston. Her father, the Rev. Jim Birchfield, performed the ceremony.

Love, etc.: A baby for Sen. Ron Wyden and Nancy Bass Wyden

• Born: A daughter, Scarlett Willa, to Sen. Ron Wyden and Nancy Bass Wyden, in Portland, Ore., on Thursday. A healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces, his staff told reporters. His fifth child (including two from his first marriage) and their third together, after twins born in 2007. The news that the Oregon Democrat and his wife were expecting, at ages 63 and 51, came as a surprise ("Yes, it sounds incredible," he wrote in a note to staff last spring announcing her pregnancy), but it's not unheard of, even in the Senate: John and Elizabeth Edwards had the last of their children together in 2000, when she was 50.
