Carolyn Hax: Holidays and rotating boyfriends; getting a spouse's cold shoulder
Dec 21st 2012, 00:28

Dear Carolyn:

My family consists of 20-plus people. Every Thanksgiving, we gather at my sister's house and Christmas at mine.

Our niece, who is divorced, has three children. Two are adults so they show up later only to snack and I guess visit us. Her youngest is under 10, so she brings him. And if she has a boyfriend at the time, she asks if it's okay to bring him.

Fun things to do during your winter break
Dec 20th 2012, 22:03

Still looking for things to do over winter break? We have three fun suggestions that should keep you busy.

Check out ZooLights. The annual animal-themed light display at the National Zoo is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday; again from Wednesday through December 30; and again on New Year's Day. The zoo uses more than 500,000 lights to create scenes with tigers, bears, birds, even a Komodo dragon! There are also musical displays and a new garden scene. Bundle up for your nighttime walk, although you can duck into the exhibit buildings to catch sight of some real animals and to warm up. Best of all, it's free!

Hey, isn't that . . . ?: Joe Biden
Dec 20th 2012, 19:13

Joe Biden having a quick dinner in the main dining room the Hamilton on 14th Street — the soup of the day, beef barley — with one of his granddaughters, before rushing off to see "Les Miserables" at the National Theatre around the corner. (WTOP's Bob Madigan caught up with them there in the fourth row; seems the veep has seen the musical many, many times before.)

Read this: What does Miss USA's Miss Universe win mean for Maryland runner-up?; 'Lincoln' at Capitol
Dec 20th 2012, 17:34

Other interesting stories in The Washington Post:

Miss USA Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas last night, and you know why this matters? Because we think this maybe possibly means that Miss Maryland Nana Meriwether, the Beltway native and Sidwell Friends grad who was her first runner-up last spring, now takes over at Miss USA. (We're now consulting the Miss USA handbook on this with the assistance of our lawyers.) And if not, well, hey, that could have almost been Meriwether ruling the galaxy. (Related: Donald Trump wins $5 million libel claim against Miss Pennsylvania. No, really.)

Redskins' RGIII, Nationals' Jayson Werth provided great sports memories for 2012
Dec 20th 2012, 16:48

The days are growing short. The year is almost over. So it is a good time to look back and remember what was good and bad about sports in 2012. After all, what do all the games become but memories?

●Best newcomer: What a lucky year for Washington sports fans. The Nationals' teenage sensation Bryce Harper and Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III burst onto the scene. So who was better? It's awfully close, but I would say RGIII. Even though Harper was terrific, Griffin made a bigger difference for his team.

Jamal Muhammad: WPFW DJ's life was lived, and saved, through jazz
Dec 20th 2012, 13:00

When you heard Jamal Muhammad spin jazz on WPFW, you didn't simply hear music. You heard the enthusiasm and passion of a man who had lived the jazz life — and had the stories that went with it.

Muhammad, who died at 77 on Feb. 5 from hepatitis, had been a fixture at the leftist-leaning, listener-supported station (89.3 FM) for more than 25 years. He often talked over the records — anticipating a hot solo with a "Yeah, yeah, come in and blow" — and between songs recounted his memories of specific shows. Listeners almost felt as if they were in his living room, conversing with him as he shared his epic record collection.
