PM Update: Mix of precipitation moves out; slow clearing for Christmas

Many parts of our far northern and western suburbs will enjoy a White Christmas thanks to the 1-2 inches of snow that fell today. Elsewhere, it was mostly just a sloppy mix that amounted to bare ground. The precipitation winds down this evening, to be followed by cloudy, foggy conditions into Christmas Day. Christmas afternoon promises partial sunshine before the next storm approaches with more mixed precipitation concerns.

Radar shows light snow and flurries have advanced into the immediate metro region and our legions of Twitter reporters provide ground truth. Snow is falling throughout northern Virginia, Prince George's county, and flurries have also been spotted in the District and Bethesda. This activity will continue to advance into our northern suburbs in the next hour.

Dangerous severe weather outbreak possible in South Christmas Day

NE man fatally shot outside Capitol Hill home

With the holidays, this week will feel like one very long weekend for a lot of lucky Washingtonians. Looking for the best reasons to get out of the house on Christmas Day and beyond?

After the presents have been unwrapped and every last candy cane has been consumed, catch one of the season's most buzzed-about films, including Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," or "Les Miserables," both of which will open Christmas Day. Man killed in morning crash in Pr. George's

A man was killed Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Prince George's County, authorities said.

The man was traveling northbound between Annapolis Road and Riverdale Road in Landover at about 11 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and hit a large tree in the median strip of the parkway, according to county police.

Metro to have some delays on holiday weekend

Metro had said it would have no weekend track work for the two holiday weekends on most of its rail lines -- except for the Green Line. It was taking a break as part of its usual holiday break from upgrading the aging system, reported Dr. Gridlock.

Wintry mix approaching from southwest; some snow may accumulate in colder suburbs

A weak weather system coming up from the southwest has already produced a mix of snow, sleet and rain in central Virginia. This area of mixed precipitation should reach the Washington, D.C. metro area this afternoon.

Metro to stay open later for Sunday's Redskins game

Metro said that it will stay open an extra hour on Sunday for fans to use the rail system as they go to FedEx field.

The game starts at 8:20 p.m.

The extra hour of service is paid for by an agreement with the Washington Redskins. Metro typically closes at midnight on Sundays.

Man found fatally shot in car in Capitol Hill

A District man was found fatally shot early Monday in a vehicle parked on a Capitol Hill street, according to D.C. police.

Officer Anthony Clay, a police spokesman, said patrol officers responding to a call of shots fired about 2 a.m. found the man sitting in the driver's seat. The vehicle was in the 1200 block of C St. NE.
