| Goodbye, FBI? Dec 4th 2012, 13:00 It's actually happening: Federal property managers have taken concrete steps toward relocating FBI headquarters somewhere other than the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Will it be to Fairfax County? Will it be to Prince George's? Not if the Warrior on the Hill has her way: "The FBI is the last agency that would want to be out of the District of Columbia," Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) told Jonathan O'Connell. "It needs proximity to Capitol Hill and the White House on a daily basis. And when I say proximity, I mean rapid proximity." But the Bureau's space and security needs may well make it incompatible with responsible urban development. In any case, nothing could be more responsible than eliminating the black hole of urbanity that is the J. Edgar Hoover Building. Here are four we think you can't miss. Wednesday: On Dec. 5, 1933, Utah passed the 21st Amendment, ending Prohibition. Seventy-nine years later, the anniversary is still a good excuse for a party. The D.C. Craft Bartenders Guild throws the Repeal Day Ball , an annual black-tie gala that attracts a who's-who of local mixologists and special guests from New York to San Francisco, all of whom take turns whipping up their favorite cocktails. Tickets ($100) include an open bar, hors d'oeuvres and dancing to the swing-era sounds of the Red Hot Rhythm Chiefs. Looking for something more affordable? Jack Rose's $20 "Friends of the Saloon" event includes a two-level party with burlesque performances, bottomless glasses of champagne, prohibition-priced cocktails, a special whiskey menu and even cigar pairings. (There are even more Repeal Day events on the GOG Blog.) However, today's record of 76 set in 1998 may be a stretch. A cold front arrives late tonight with maybe a few showers to turn temperatures downward again. But guess what? Another round of warming (into at least the 60s) returns for the weekend with possibly some additional showers. | | TV and radio listings, December 4 Dec 4th 2012, 08:43 NBA 7 p.m. Miami atWashington » Comcast SportsNet, WJFK (106.7 FM), WFED (1500 AM) 7:30 p.m. Oklahoma City at Brooklyn » NBA TV MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL 6:30 p.m. Lamar at Purdue » Big Ten Network Read full article >> | | Yo-Yo Ma and the Bach cello suites: familiar, but certainly not routine Dec 4th 2012, 06:41 Seeing and hearing Yo-Yo Ma play the Bach cello suites is an act of cultural tourism. I was going to equate it with visiting Chartres, but it's not quite that monumental — Chartres might be the equivalent of, say, hearing Daniel Barenboim play all the Beethoven sonatas (yet again). The six Bach suites take up only one or two evenings; playing the first three of them, plus accompanying works, as Ma did at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Monday night, occupies no more than two hours. This is not to disparage them, and certainly not to postulate length as a measure of quality: simply to say that Ma has played them so often they are something of a touchstone, not only for him but for most music-lovers, and so experiencing him playing them could be akin to ticking something off a bucket list. As he made his way down the field -- at a light jog, instead of a full sprint -- he didn't even bother protecting the football in his right hand, instead spinning it absent-mindedly and flipping it in the air. As he neared the goal-line, pursued by a wall of cameras and microphones, he stopped to hug teammates and mug for cameras. The dogs, which apparently lived at the house where the incident occurred, were later euthanized by the county animal control department, police said. Other teams in need of a No. 5 starter may look for innings eaters or junkballers or any lefty with a pulse. Rizzo looks at his four twenty-somethings with oppressive stuff and wants another to complete the set. He does not want his fifth starter to be a Fifth Starter. Edgar Hoover FBI Building is unloved. Condominiums have sprouted nearby in recent years, and neighbors glower at the concrete planters that surround the government building. City officials consider the Brutalist structure on Pennsylvania Avenue a drab hulk in the midst of an otherwise colorful and rising downtown. Even the FBI says the building no longer meets its needs.
