Editorial Board: Christmas 2012: A day of sorrow mixed with joy
Dec 25th 2012, 01:25

THE CHRISTMAS story is one of warmth and light, but there's a darker chapter that isn't so often retold. Not long after the birth of Jesus, the Roman-installed king of Israel, Herod, got word that a future king had been born in Bethlehem. Herod, insecure and ever fearful, had all the male children in Bethlehem under 2 years of age killed. But Jesus's family, forewarned, had already fled into Egypt.

Editorial Board: Gov. McDonnell's detour from bold action on Va. road funding
Dec 25th 2012, 01:25

ONE DAY, POSSIBLY, Virginia may have a governor with the guts to tell voters that they have become transportation freeloaders, using roads, bridges, tunnels and rails whose cost are not covered by the taxes they pay. One day, maybe, the governor will acknowledge that roads are no different than utilities — that without periodic rate (read: tax) increases, it is impossible to keep up with expanding usage, inflation and wear and tear. One day Virginia may have a chief executive who ignores ideology and fights to solve the biggest problems.

A Washington in need of major repairs
Dec 25th 2012, 01:24

In 1962, Casey Stengel, the longtime manager of the New York Yankees, came out of retirement to lead the New York Mets, an expansion team. That season the Mets lost an astounding 120 games — which is within about 20 games of what Stengel used to win with the Yankees — and prompted him to ask a memorable question: "Can't anybody here play this game?" That very question can now be asked about Washington.

In Saudi Arabia, women are confined by technology
Dec 25th 2012, 01:23

Text messages are the ultimate convenience, used by people worldwide to communicate, often to notify friends and families of their whereabouts. In many countries, new technologies can serve to enhance individual liberty. But technology does not always liberate.

This Christmas, joy wrestles with grief
Dec 25th 2012, 01:23

This is a Christmas season shadowed by sorrow. We know, of course, that human beings, even small ones, sometimes die in horrible, unfair ways. But all the horror and unfairness seemed to arrive at once in Newtown, Conn., where some parents wake on Christmas Day, if they slept at all, to mourn their absent children.

Encouraging signs toward peace in Afghanistan
Dec 25th 2012, 01:22

In this season of good will, there is a rare bit of good cheer about the prospects for peace with the Taliban in Afghanistan. The reason seems to be that some Taliban leaders are concluding that they couldn't win the civil war that might follow U.S. withdrawal of combat troops.

Campaign contributions best kept private
Dec 24th 2012, 22:57

Regarding Sen. Michael Bennet's Dec. 17 letter to the editor:

Campaign donations need to be kept secret just as ballots need to be kept secret, and for exactly the same reason. Retribution will be taken against those who contribute or vote the "wrong" way if their contribution is made public or known to the opposition.

A Christmas plea for peace
Dec 24th 2012, 22:57

The following is a letter to the editor published in The Post on Christmas Day in 1936, on the same day as the Herblock cartoon above:

Yesterday, as I stood among the ancient relics of a building in the Smithsonian; as I stood in a room where I was surrounded by objects so many centuries old, this thought came to my wondering mind: That of all the arts men had learned, had handed down through the ages, that the art of peace had yet to be learned.

Legal prostitution: The logical way to go
Dec 24th 2012, 22:57

Regarding the Dec. 20 Metro article "Up-to-date vice trap," about a police sting in Prince George's County:

Most states have declared prostitution illegal, and the practice of prostitution poses many dangers to the sex providers and their clients. The possibility of assault, robbery, transmission of disease and criminal charges exists for both parties. If an individual is married, the risk of breaking up a family and divorce also exists.

'Yes' on gun talk; 'no' on gun surrender
Dec 24th 2012, 22:57

Debbie Dingell's Dec. 21 op-ed, "We need a new dialogue," was superb. I am sorry Ms. Dingell had to endure such a painful experience with guns and violence as a child, but it gave her a unique insight into the anxiety that has plagued many children exposed to violence and caused irreparable harm to quite a few. I fear that the children who survived the ordeal at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., will carry the experience with them throughout their lives.

Ever closer to the 'fiscal cliff'
Dec 24th 2012, 22:57

Regarding the Dec. 22 news article "On brink of 'cliff,' economy is growing":

The inability of the executive and legislative branches of the federal government to reach agreement imperils our economy. President Obama needs to recognize that the GOP's recent limited shift on tax rates and raising revenue is remarkable, and the GOP needs to recognize that the Senate and the presidency are held by the Democrats and that their views about the economy must be accommodated.

Book World: Julie Klam's 'Friendkeeping' makes a perfect gift for women under 45
Dec 24th 2012, 22:43

"Friendkeeping" is a jolly, largehearted book, an anthology of etiquette more than a memoir, dedicated, as the title suggests, to the care and keeping of friends. Julie Klam makes no claim to being a fancy expert. She has lived her expertise. Her own life is her source of knowledge.

Jonathan Bernstein: The filibuster and the judicial crisis
Dec 24th 2012, 20:22

I hope everyone saw a great story by Robert Barnes about gridlock and the courts -- making the key point that there are more judicial vacancies now than there were when Barack Obama took office. For that, there is plenty of blame to go around.

Jonathan Bernstein: Obama on track to stay in nation's good graces
Dec 24th 2012, 18:47

How is Barack Obama doing in the polls after the election? Quite well, actually.

During the election year, you may recall that he was quite a bit more popular (measured by Gallup approval numbers) than were one-term presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush and solidly less popular than easily reelected presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Instead, Obama closely tracked George W. Bush.

Jamelle Bouie: Team Romney still doesn't see that Americans rejected its policies
Dec 24th 2012, 16:07

Over the weekend, the Boston Globe ran a long post-mortem of Mitt Romney's unsuccessful bid for the presidency. Thus far, looks at the campaign have focused on Team Romney's failure to deliver in the final weeks of the election. The Globe, on the other hand, details a campaign beset with a whole host of problems.
