Dear Carolyn:

It's almost Christmas and I know my beloved ADD husband hasn't done a thing about my present. I tried to make things easy on him by asking for one thing related to his hobbies and interests, but, honestly, he forgets. I try not to badger him, but keep blurting out attempts at humorous reminders ("Now you'll have to get me diamonds AND chocolate!"), but I don't like myself when I say stuff like that . . . I just get so frustrated. Any wisdom?

Dreaming of a new New Columbia

Hark, citizens of the District. News of import. On Wednesday, at the close of both the 112th Congress and his career, retiring Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Quit) introduced the New Columbia Admission Act, which would transform the District of Columbia into the 51st state in the union. Under the proposed bill S. 3696, you would finally be afforded the same rights as your friends across the Potomac River and Eastern Avenue. But! New Columbia would be just a wee bit smaller than old D.C., because the federal government would retain jurisdiction over its own buildings, the monuments and the Mall.

Alison Pepper and Gene Hundertmark had known each other for at least seven years. They frequented the same indoor rock-climbing gym in Alexandria and had mutual friends from that world.

Hundertmark always found Pepper attractive, but he'd been in an on-again, off-again relationship for years and knew through the grapevine that Pepper had a serious boyfriend.
