Police lean toward robbery motive in Capitol Hill slaying

Former Maryland football coach Joe Krivak dies at 77

Joe Krivak, 77, the University of Maryland's head football coach from 1987 to 1991, died Dec. 25, the university said in a statement. Current head coach Randy Edsall said on Twitter that Mr. Krivak had leukemia. No other details about his death were released.

PM Update: Rain, wintry mix end, howling winds return Thursday with sun; Saturday snow?

Today's rainy, "sleezy" (mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain) storm is moving out, leaving multi-colored skies in its wake. Clearing will be slow and some patchy shower activity remains possible overnight. Some icy spots are possible north and west of the beltway. On Thursday, we clear out, but it's very windy, with gusts to 50 mph possible.

Update: Heavy rain into tonight around D.C.; ice far west and northwest suburbs

Most of the immediate metro area has changed from snow and ice to rain, but pockets of freezing rain continue in the normally colder areas. Mainly rain, heavy at times, continues through 6-10 p.m. or so. It's a cold, miserable rain - the worst kind - with temperatures holding in the low-to-mid 30s - maybe to near 40 southeast of town.

Catania shakes up staff, bringing back Ben Young

D.C. Council member David A. Catania (I-At large) is shaking up his staff as he prepares to take over the all-important Education Committee in January.

Earlier this month, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) named Catania as the new chairman of the Education Committee, a post the at-large council member had lobbied for. Catania will no longer have oversight over health issues.

Update: Wintry mess to change to heavy rain this afternoon

From the I-95 corridor, including the District, out into our northern and western suburbs, snow, sleet and freezing may have created messy, slick travel this morning - especially with most roads untreated. This wintry mix will gradually transition to heavy rain late this morning and afternoon, first along the I-95 corridor and eventually working its way towards our far western suburbs.

Md. officer shoots, kills man wielding hammer

TANEYTOWN, Md. — State police say a Taneytown police officer shot and killed a man who approached the officer while carrying a hammer.

Police say 26-year-old Edward Becker Jr. refused repeated requests to drop the hammer and got within arm's length of the officer with the tool raised in the air. That's when the officer opened fire.
