Editorial Board: Too many government secrets Dec 25th 2012, 23:43 THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT keeps petabytes (that's a million gigabytes each) of information secret every year — some of it highly sensitive, some of it hardly. A 1972 diplomatic telegram that discusses the exchange of gifts between the United States and China — musk oxen from the Nixon administration in return for two Chinese pandas — was labeled confidential, and it wasn't declassified until 1997. Russia is the third-most favored place for adoptions by U.S. families, after China and Ethiopia. The adoptions have often led to bruised feelings of national pride. At the same time, many of the children enjoy a better life than if they had languished in Russia's grim institutions. He left out the reason the $3 trillion Social Security trust fund is in U.S. Treasury bonds: The Treasury borrowed the money from Social Security in the first place. (That's what bonds are: loans.) Am I to be held responsible for a little bit of the federal deficit every time I redeem one of my U.S. Savings Bonds? I raised four children, all adults now, without foisting on them a belief in Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Madame Befana or the Tooth Fairy. They are all well-adjusted and leading productive lives; they don't feel deprived. Since my culpas are too vast for this tiny space, my predictions best in retrospect and my resolutions inevitably ignored, I thought I'd list a few resolutions for the rest of the world. These, too, are likely to be ignored, but I'll feel better getting a few things off my chest. Read full article >> | The gun debate, from all sides Dec 25th 2012, 23:15 West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchinmade a number of interesting and reasonable suggestions in his Dec. 23 commentary ["Tipping Point?," Outlook]. But his comment that, if you blame the National Rifle Association for the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., you are in effect blaming all of its 4 million members is without basis.
