Study: Whom voters want to win is less predictive than whom they expect to win
Nov 1st 2012, 20:59

Election polls come in a lot of flavors. Some sample registered voters; some try to screen for only "likely" voters. Some use humans to make the calls; others use robots. But most have one thing in common: They ask people whom they plan to vote for. And it's those answers that are the headline result — the numbers that get the most attention from the politicians and the press.

0915 Taxes and Economy

Back in September, I spent a few days hosting "The Ed Show." I wanted to do a segment taking a closer look at some of the claims and counter-claims surrounding Mitt Romney's tax plan, and so I invited Bruce Bartlett, one of Washington's most knowledgeable and experienced tax hands, onto the show. "I have something for you," he said before he left. Then he slid a copy of a new Congressional Research Service report on marginal tax rates across the table.

Back in 1932, Colorado voters took to the polls and approved Amendment 7, a bill that legalized alcohol consumption and ended prohibition.

Now, 80 years later, the state is  weighing Amendment 64, a voter proposition that would similarly legalize marijuana.

Grover Norquist: Even if Obama is reelected, taxes aren't going up
Nov 1st 2012, 16:17

Grover Norquist is the president for Americans for Tax Reform. He's led the conservative push against accepting any tax increases whatsoever, convincing the vast majority of Congressional Republicans — and current candidates for office — to sign his anti-tax pledge. Can we stop the seas from rising? Yes, but less than you think.
Nov 1st 2012, 13:45

The politics of Friday's jobs report
Nov 1st 2012, 13:41

There have been 45 monthly employment reports since Barack Obama was inaugurated president. Number 46 will be the biggest of them all.

Not in terms of significance for what it tells us about the economy; on that score, every report is about the same. They provide important guidance on whether the job market is getting better or worse, and in something close to real time, but are subject to revision and weird statistical blips, and thus are only one piece of a complex economic puzzle.

ADP, the big payroll processing firm, has put out its October numbers in advance of Friday's jobs report, and they're pretty promising: 158,000 new jobs created, though their September number was revised down to 114,000 (coincidentally, exactly the Bureau of Labor Statistics's number) from a first guess of 162,000.
