Microsoft's Surface tablet, Windows 8 operating system go on sale

Microsoft embarked on a new era Friday as its two long-anticipated projects finally went on sale: a major overhaul of its operating system and a foray into hardware with a tablet computer.

It took years to get both on the shelves, and now Microsoft is waiting to see whether customers will bite. The firm set up temporary stores to get its products in front of more shoppers. There was even a "pop-up" store in Times Square for a major midnight launch Friday morning.

China's advantage erodes in a key area: rare earth minerals

Two years after China limited its exports of "rare earth minerals," unnerving developed countries that depended on them for industrial uses, production is expanding at sites outside China.

And as new sources of rare earth minerals have appeared, that has meant new jobs — including in the tiny town of China Grove, N.C., where Japan's Hitachi Metals is planning to produce high-tech magnets from rare earth minerals.

Iran currency traders face pressures, operate underground

TEHRAN — Ahmad, a 45-year-old conservative Iranian, saw his business brought to an abrupt halt when his Tehran shop was sealed off by state authorities recently.

A currency trader for 20 years, Ahmad has continued to operate underground, although his daily trade has slowed to a trickle.
