D.C. area forecast: New Year, same old cold and clouds; no significant snow in sight

2013 begins as 2012 ended with clouds, cold temperatures, and also a slight risk of a light rain or snow shower. The balance of the week is a little better with dry weather, but still expect mainly seasonal to colder-than-normal temperatures. The weekend also looks dry with maybe a bit warmer weather on Saturday, but then colder and breezier again on Sunday.

Metro police announcement is white noise to some riders

Homicides decrease in Washington region

The number of homicides dropped again last year in the Washington region, including in the District, which grew in population and yet recorded the fewest killings in a half-century.

As of Monday evening, the District had 88 killings in 2012, a milestone for D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier, whose long-standing goal has been fewer than 100 homicides. As recently as 2009, the District had 140 killings. In 2011, there were 108.

Redskins weighing possible contract extension for Mike Shanahan

The Washington Redskins are seriously considering negotiating a contract extension this offseason with Coach Mike Shanahan, multiple people with knowledge of the team's planning said Monday.

The extension would be Shanahan's reward for coaching the Redskins to their first NFC East title since the 1999 season. The Redskins secured the division crown with Sunday night's 28-18 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at FedEx Field. They're scheduled to host the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in a first-round NFC playoff game.
