*The MLS playoffs commenced Wednesday night with the Houston Dynamo, the 2011 runner-up, winning at Chicago, 2-1. It wasn't pretty, and I'm not talking about the match. A nationally televised postseason game was played in front of large patches of empty seats on a frigid night at Toyota Park. This is what happens when an excessive playoff game scheduled on four days' notice is played on a weeknight in a cold-weather location: Aside from season ticket holders, it's a tough sell. The announced crowd was 10,923.

Graham Spanier faces charges in Penn State scandal, report says
Nov 1st 2012, 12:07

Graham Spanier, the former president of Penn State University, is expected to be charged today in connection with the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Sources who requested anonymity indicated that Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly would announce that Spanier, who has stepped down as president, will be charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. The investigation into allegations against Sandusky, which began with his arrest last Nov. 5, resulted in his conviction in June. He is serving a 30-to-60 year sentence in a Pennsylvania state prison. In addition, Athletic Director Tim Curley, who is on leave and whose contract will not be renewed, and Gary Schultz, the retired vice-president for business and finance, also face charges of perjury before a grand jury investigation into the matter and failure to report suspected child abuse. Curley and Schultz are scheduled to go to trial in January.

Bryce Harper's Halloween clown costume
Nov 1st 2012, 03:42

And thus did Halloween 2012 become a pastiche of the previous six months of Bryce Harper's young life.

The shirt represents his bond with Under Armour, one of the few major sponsors of a career thus far focused more on performance than perception. And yet with the loud clown homage — first in words, then in accessories — Harper also references his knack for the catchphrase, his nose for the news, his domination of headlines and highlights.

Maryland football is down to a linebacker and a tight end as its top two quarterbacks
Nov 1st 2012, 01:00

When the final whistle sounded and a gloomy Eleanor Roosevelt football team trudged off its home field last November, an undefeated record spoiled by a 13-8 loss to C.H. Flowers in the 4A South region semifinals, Shawn Petty had his mind made up. A two-way threat for Coach Tom Green and the Raiders, Petty was committed as a linebacker to the University of Maryland. He had no choice. Zero college offers to play quarterback came his way.
