And the winner is.? To be determined much later
Nov 23rd 2012, 22:53

Andrew Bynum has yet to play a game for Philadelphia and his brittle knees apparently aren't even strong enough to keep him upright while bowling. Dwight Howard is already playing for his third coach in Los Angeles. Denver is a track team that has been slow to leave the starting blocks with Andre Iguodala. And Orlando is as terrible as expected but mostly thankful that it didn't give up its franchise big man for a fragile one.

The biggest trade of last summer a behemoth, four-team deal that involved three all-stars switching uniforms has yet to yield favorable results for any of the parties involved. Players need time to get comfortable and teams certainly need more time to develop chemistry but the early struggles of the participants reflect the downside of making a big offseason splash: Sometimes the water hurts once you hit it.

This season, several teams around the league have been slow to reap immediate benefits from expensive, headline-grabbing moves.

Brooklyn is off to a respectable start since adding Joe Johnson and the rest of his $126 million contract in a trade with Atlanta, but the five-time all-star guard is shooting poorly and having his least productive season in nearly 10 years. Leaving behind that miracle-working training staff in Phoenix, 38-year-old, two-time MVP Steve Nash has only played one game with the Lakers after banging knees with Portland rookie Damian Lillard.

Linsanity was a one-month phenomenon that started and ended in New York, but Jeremy Lin has been spared greater scrutiny after signing a massive deal with Houston because the Rockets made a move that actually worked, prying away James Harden from Oklahoma City and watching him become one of the league leaders in scoring (although some would argue that Harden has actually diminished Lin's influence).

New Orleans gave Eric Gordon a maximum contract and don't know when he'll suit up alongside No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis because of a troublesome right knee that limited him to just nine games last season. Indiana center Roy Hibbert doesn't have any health concerns but the Pacers have been sputtering and the former Georgetown standout hasn't come close to resembling the all-star player who warranted a $78 million extension.

Some smaller-scale moves are paying off handsomely, with Ray Allen and Jason Kidd having seamless adjustments in Miami and New York, respectively. But the teams that made drastic alterations have had to take a few lessons in patience and it shouldn't come as a surprise that the teams that rank among the NBA's best have maintained relative continuity from the lockout-shortened season.

At sporadic times throughout the first four games this season, Coach Mark Turgeon will point to his bench and order a total lineup change. Brooklyn's Barclays Center and Nets return professional sports to historic borough
Nov 23rd 2012, 19:41

NEW YORK — Andy Rosen is only 43 years old, so he wasn't around back then. But he imagines this is what it used to be like at Junior's when his grandfather ran the popular Brooklyn eatery: a bustling morning crowd, some there for breakfast, some for a drink to start the day, many others for cheesecake. His grandfather would watch them pay their check and catch the trolley car to Ebbets Field to watch the Dodgers.

Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: Commonwealth Cup game is for low stakes, but still a must-win for both teams
Nov 23rd 2012, 18:15

BLACKSBURG, Va. —Virginia Tech linebacker Bruce Taylor didn't like what he saw Monday during practice.

The Hokies looked sluggish and out of sync, and their senior captain immediately assumed it was the sort of complacency born from the team's recent dominance of the Commonwealth Cup, which has been displayed in a prominent location during the week leading into Virginia Tech's annual game against Virginia. After all, there's a piece of paper attached to the trophy reminding the Hokies that they will have possessed it for 2,917 consecutive days when these two in-state rivals face off again Saturday afternoon.

The next game Washington's Monday night date with the New York Giants on Dec. 3 carries great importance. The Redskins have forced their way back into the playoff discussion, and depending on how the Giants do Sunday night against Green Bay, they could be playing for a share of first place in the division in that game.

RGIII has Redskins believing in themselves

Amid the electronics and the video games and trendiest toys, surely Robert Griffin III jerseys were on a few lists during the wee hours of Black Friday, and Dark Gray Thursday night. Even for those who aren't Washington Redskins fans, don't you want that jersey for, I don't know, a nightgown or laundry day apparel? And wouldn't arm stockings be the perfect stocking stuffer? Something to think about on Cyber Monday.

Updated with Ryan's comments Friday

The New York Jets sure could use a savior, the kind of guy who came on in 2011 and led his team to the NFL playoffs. But all the chants and tweets and fan signs and media criticism of Mark Sanchez won't prompt the New York Jets to put Tim Tebow in at quarterback.

Coach Mike Shanahan says takeaways were key
Nov 23rd 2012, 15:00

The Washington Redskins reverted a bit on defense during Thursday's win in Dallas.
After a modest string of improved efforts on pass defense, the Redskins yielded 441 passing yards by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. They surrendered 28 points in the second half and had to hold on late to secure their first-ever Thanksgiving Day triumph over the Cowboys, 38-31.
But the defense did contribute with its three takeaways, interceptions by cornerback DeAngelo Hall and linebacker London Fletcher and a fumble caused by cornerback Josh Wilson and recovered by safety DeJon Gomes.

Virginia QBs Michael Rocco and Phillip Sims reflect on season, look ahead to uncertain future

Virginia sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims chuckled and grinned this week when reminded about the last time he played at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium. It was a high school game almost four years ago, but Sims has watched the highlights of his performance in the 2008 Virginia AAA state championship game enough to remember how it felt to throw five first-half touchdowns in Oscar Smith High's 52-24 rout of Osbourn.

Rex Ryan: Can firing the coach fix the Jets?
Nov 23rd 2012, 14:22

Maybe he isn't enough of a control freak to be an NFL head coach. Maybe he just isn't button-downed enough. Whatever the underlying reasons, New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan is running a dysfunctional football team right now -- and it was jaw-droppingly apparent in a nationally televised loss Thanksgiving night that the New York Post called "Butt Ugly."
