Hundreds of people rallied outside a Wal-Mart in Landover Hills on Friday morning, protesting what they considered efforts to silence the company's workers.

The protest was one of 1,000 planned for Thanksgiving weekend by OUR Walmart, a national labor group. OUR Walmart has accused the world's largest retail chain of retaliating against workers who speak out against low pay and understaffing. Group members said they saw the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy as a chance to draw attention to their cause.

Woman visiting from China dies after Potomac River rescue

A 53-year-old woman from China who was in the area visiting relativesdied Friday after being pulled from the Potomac River in Great Falls, according to Montgomery County police.

The woman was identified as Karjia Jiang. Police said she had been staying in Great Falls, on the Virginia side of the park that runs along the Maryland border.

Loudoun principal Kathleen Hwang killed in traffic accident

The principal of Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn was killed in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon, the Loudoun County school district announced in a statement.

Kathleen Hwang, who had led the school since 2005, died near her home, according to the school district. The statement did not give additional details about the circumstances of Hwang's death.

Fairfax man, 25, dead in Thursday evening crash

A Fairfax man has been charged with driving under the influence after a Thursday night crash that killed the passenger, police said.

According to the Prince William County Police, Jeffrey Scott Davis Jr., 23, was driving a 2003 Chevy S-10 on Yorkshire Lane in Manassas at about 10:32 p.m. when he crossed into a ditch and rolled over.
