The math of God: Market predictor Tom DeMark has some big names among the faithful
Nov 25th 2012, 01:14

Past the two Bentleys in the driveway and beyond the pool and mini water park, the home theater and a sports bar hung with enough memorabilia to equip a basketball team, Tom DeMark has his office — a dark, wood-paneled lair with six computer screens.

Charitable deduction is indispensable but shouldn't be sole motivation for giving
Nov 25th 2012, 00:56

My husband and I tithe to our church, meaning we give 10 percent of our income. We also donate money to various charities.

Our giving results in a tax break because we itemize on our tax return.

Would we give less if we didn't have the tax deduction? I'm confident we wouldn't. We give because we believe it's the right thing to do for folks who are fortunate enough to have money to give. Having the tax deduction is a bonus, but one that has never driven us to give more or less. I'm actually a bit turned off when a charity tries to persuade us to give by overly emphasizing the standard phrase, "Your donation is tax deductible."

TechBits: As part of a deal with Lucasfilm, Rovio creates Angry Birds Star Wars
Nov 24th 2012, 22:50

Rovio went to a galaxy far, far away for inspiration for its latest Angry Birds title. As part of a deal with the recently-sold Lucasfilm, the company has taken the Angry Birds into the Star Wars universe, giving the birds Rebel Alliance personalities you'll recognize — including the droids! — as they take on the evil Sith piggies. The first level of the game starts you off at Tatooine, complete with twin suns, and the references continue to fly fast and thick from there. The game has levels with and without gravity, pulling in game mechanics from Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space. The game is good fun, and the Leia hairdo surprisingly doesn't affect any of the birds' aerodynamics. 99 cents, for iOS and Android devices.

Think U.S. GDP numbers are unreliable? Check out Ghana.
Nov 24th 2012, 18:57

We've grumbled before about the fact that U.S. GDP data can be fairly unreliable at least in its early stages. For instance, everyone initially thought the U.S. economy was growing at a 1.8 percent pace in the first quarter of 2011. A year later, we learned that the true number was just 0.1 percent. It's a reason to be skeptical of those early indicators.

The doctor will e-mail you now. And then see you later.
Nov 24th 2012, 18:08

When Ted Palen, a Kaiser Permanente researcher, started investigating what happens when doctors begin e-mailing with patients, he thought he would see the practice lighten workloads. Patients would get their questions answered remotely, with no need to turn up in person.
