Virginia PG Teven Jones suspended for season opener at George Mason

Virginia already had doubts about who would play point guard when it begins the regular season next month, and the situation became a bit more murky Friday.

The Cavaliers announced redshirt freshman guard Teven Jones has been suspended for the team's two closed preseason scrimmages and the season opener at George Mason on Nov. 9 after violating team rules.

Tyler Polumbus fined for leg whip

Redskins right tackle Tyler Polumbus was fined for an unnecessary roughness call that he received in Sundays loss to the New York Giants.

Polumbus was fined $7,875 for a leg whip when referees believed that the lineman tried to swing his leg around to trip or slow New York defensive tackle Linval Joseph. Polumbus, making roughly $700,000 this season, had fallen to the ground, and his leg flew up, but it didnt do anything to impede Joseph.

Alfred Morris voted rookie of the week

Redskins running back Alfred Morris has been voted by fans on NFL.com as rookie of the week.

Morris last Sunday rushed for 120 yards on 22 carries in Washingtons 27-24 loss to the New York Giants.

Morris beat out Indianapolis Andrew Luck, New England linebacker Donta Hightower, Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin and Minnesota safety Harrison Smith for the award.

Caleb Rowe threw the last 100 from his knees, and if he didn't rifle a spiral into his father's chest, it wouldn't count. Dave was building muscle memory and proper mechanics, making sure Caleb's launch point was straight over the top of his head.

NCAA denies Dez Wellss request for waiver; Maryland will appeal

The NCAA has denied Marylands request to waive the usual transfer rules in the case of swingman Dez Wells.

An athletics spokesman said Maryland plans to file an appeal.

This means that Wells and the Terrapins will have to continue to wait while the NCAA evaluates the appeal. If the decision stands, Wells will have to sit out the 2012-13 season per NCAA transfer rules.

NHL cancels all games in November (updated)

The NHL canceled games through Nov. 30 on Friday, bringing the total number of games lost during this lockout to 326, or 26.5 percent of the season.

The National Hockey League deeply regrets having to take this action, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a news release. By presenting a proposal to the NHLPA that contemplated a fair division of revenues and was responsive to Player concerns regarding the value of their contracts, we had hoped to be able to forge a long-term Collective Bargaining Agreement that would have preserved an 82-game Regular Season for our fans. Unfortunately, that did not occur.
