Sophie Chase, Lake Braddock win Patriot District cross-country titles; Louis Colson sparks Edison in National District

Sophie Chase dazzled Thursday on her way to winning the Virginia AAA Patriot District cross-country title and leading Lake Braddock to the team championship in Fairfax Station.

The Bruins senior scorched the 2.98-mile course, powering over its final hill before pushing across the finish line in 17 minutes 2 seconds. Chase scored a seven-second victory over runner-up Caroline Alcorta of West Springfield, who was sizzling in her own right when she ran a personal-best 17:09. The junior All-Met registered one of the 10 fastest times ever at historic Burke Lake Park and she is only in her second full season in the sport.

We've been pretty socked in with clouds all day thanks to this pesky marine layer that seems to be enjoying its stay overhead. But, temperatures still made it to highs near 70, which is certainly nothing to complain about. Any breaks here and there are likely to fill back in heading into the night, and we've got a near repeat tomorrow before Hurricane Sandy starts to close in on Sunday.

Just 10 days after she completed the Ironman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, BethAnn Telford was back at work at the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, where each time she emerged from her office, she earned a new admirer. Colleagues, security guards, guests in the building – all peppered the 43-year-old special events coordinatorwith congratulations for finishing one of the world's toughest races. Many just stared at her in amazement.
